Fractures Q&A

What are fractures?

Fractures occur when a bone breaks into several pieces. Often, they occur due to trauma, like a sports injury or car accident, but they can also form due to general wear and tear.

At KingsPoint Foot and Ankle Specialists, Dr. Tehrani boasts years of experience treating foot and ankle fractures. Whenever possible, he uses a combination of casting and noninvasive laser therapy to encourage the body’s natural healing process. For more severe fractures, Dr. Tehrani performs surgery.

Dr. Tehrani broke his ankle in 2014 and underwent reconstructive surgery. He views this experience as a blessing in disguise, as it allows him to relate to his patients and provide the highest quality of care.

Do foot and ankle fractures present symptoms?

Symptoms of foot and ankle fractures include:

  • Sudden, throbbing pain
  • Pain that’s worse during activity
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • A visible abnormality, like a lump or a bump

If you suffer a foot or ankle fracture, you might also have difficulty standing up or putting weight on the affected limb.

When should I see a podiatrist about fractures?

If you experience a foot or ankle injury and it doesn’t get better with rest or medication, make an appointment with Dr. Tehrani at Kings Point Foot and Ankle Specialists. That’s especially true if your symptoms worsen or interfere with your routine.

How are fractures diagnosed?

To diagnose fractures, Dr. Tehrani reviews your medical records, asks about your symptoms, and performs an exam. During the exam, he checks for tender areas, bruising, and redness.

If visual observation doesn’t provide enough insight, Dr. Tehrani orders digital X-rays. The office in south Los Angeles has X-ray imaging on-site, so you don’t have to visit a separate radiology facility. After confirming your diagnosis, Dr. Tehrani makes treatment recommendations.

How are fractures treated?

Treatment of fractures depends on various factors, including your age, the severity of the bone damage, and your symptoms. Dr. Tehrani might recommend:

Minor fractures

For a minor fracture, Dr. Tehrani administers MLS laser therapy to increase blood flow to your bone and reduce swelling and pain. He also applies a cast for between four and six weeks* to hold the bone in place and encourage your body’s healing process.

Major fractures

For a fracture that breaks a bone into several pieces, Dr. Tehrani might recommend reconstructive surgery. During surgery, he uses special tools and a combination of screws and plates to hold your bone in the proper position.
